Back in Town

Rome, Italy :: May 2012

We just got back from Italy this week and I'm trying to catch up on what I've missed while we were gone.  I'm back in my office and you can reach me by phone or email again.  It just might take me a little bit to come out of this gelato and travel induced coma.  Not a bad problem to have.

well hey there 2010

I've seen so many articles and editorials out there about how the last decade was really a big waste. Just lots of people dying, multiple wars, and everyone generally losing lots of money. I get that. I really do. But for me it was a time where I met some of my very best friends, spent time doing work I love, and really enjoyed my life. So I hope there is more of that plus some in the next decade. So here's to 2010. Bring it.

goodness

This week has been a something different everyday. From the weather (which has been everything to sunny and 70 to sunny and snowing) to my work (I've started a new project on the economy here in the Rocky Mountain West). I'm also happy to announce that an exhibit of my work will be on display at my favorite morning stop for pastries, Ceres Bakery in Kalispell. The show will be a collective of local Montana artists and be up for the month of May. More info to come and hopefully some of you out there can make it!

three girls, a room full of people, and annie leibovitz

Last night I had the chance to hear Annie Leibovitz speak to a gym full of people at the Marcus JCC in Atlanta. We parked at a different location and took a shuttle to the location which promptly sat in traffic heading to the event for about 2o minutes. Once we arrived I was amazed just how many people were attending. Tons.

I spent last weekend at the Atlanta Photojournalism Conference where I heard several accomplished photographers speak. In the end felt like most of the current shooters were pretty scared about losing their jobs or being turned into videographers. It was highly refreshing to see a room full of people clamoring to hear this one photographer speak about her body of work. Not everyone was a photographer. Lots of people just really enjoyed her work, or avidly read Vanity Fair, or were just a little interested in photography. They were willing to sit, wait, and listen. I often think that in today's digital age of immediate gratification people are no longer patient enough for a single photo. They are already on to the next thing. So for one night it was nice to sit with a group of people who wanted to know more about photography and just look at a photo or two.

Thanks to my friend Brooke for the free tix to the show. Here she is looking for a friend of ours in the audience.

Brooke's signiture boots.

Carleigh, me, and Brooke kicking it on the back wall before the lecture. Thanks for a fun night ladies.

not just a photo nerd

but a photo nerd with a new business card:

I think this is what happens listening to Madeleine Peyroux and playing with Illustrator.

and the winner is...

Good morning and welcome to a new era. After last night's historical election I thought I'd share some of my favorite front pages from around the world. It's always interesting to see how different papers handle historic events. From Chicago to Jakarta the world is focused on our new President-Elect. I chose most of the fronts for their great design or historical significance. I also picked a few from outside the United States just because it's always interesting to see what the rest of the world is thinking.

a swift kick

So today is somewhat of an economic bummer if you have anything to do with the stock market. But if your an employee at Creative Loafing things just got a little more depressing. The company, which owns alternative weeklies in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, Tampa and Sarasota, filed for bankruptcy.

And as if that isn't enough yucky Monday news the Orphan Works bill has passed through the house. Find out who your local representative in the Senate is and call now to tell them that this bill isn't acceptable for creative professionals.

If print media isn't dead, today sure gave it a swift kick in the gut.

Nikon Camera Blurs the Lines

Nikon is releasing the new D90 next month and it is basically being billed as a really awesome camera for non-professional photographers. But in today's world of iReport, blogging, and citizen journalism, I'm not sure if it really matters anymore as long as the content rocks.

Most important: the camera is the first SLR with the ability to record video.

That's an awesome tool to have when your editor wants you to be a one man show. It does make me wonder if it could eventually change how we all take pictures. Remember when there was a time when you couldn't chimp? Maybe people will soon talk longingly of the days when they still took single frames instead of pulling an image out of their video take.
